Re: Para nut , Brazil nut

Please, can you increase the acquiring time of both background and spectrum? It seems to me you used 600s that at 0.12 cps (the count rate at the K40 peak) means 75 counts. The statistical fluctuation of a count (in each bin) is (at 1-sigma) the square root of the counts (sqrt(75) = 8.6). Well, it's...

Re: Isotope & Europe

Well, I can't say for the whole Europe but I purchased and imported in Italy 7 disk sources from Spectrum in 3 different shipments and I never had any issue. When I ordered the sources Spectrum managed everything. The activity was chosen to be under exemption, the carrier was aware of the content an...

Re: Old lead

So you think this lead is quite useless... You never know! The amount of time from the production date is only one parameter to understand if your lead is useful or not. The other parameter is the initial concentration of Pb210. The reduction factor of Pb210 has to applied to the initial concentrat...

Re: 210Pb in 67000s Lead shield background

Hi Cicastol, interesting spectra. It should be interesting compare the spectrum with and without copper, pewter, lucite (or PVC) ecc. In this post http://www.gammaspectacular.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=341#p1588 I reported some differences with and without copper/lucite . Hope this may be ...

Re: 180 CPM as Minimum Background radiation

The answers are...yes , yes and yes. Moreover there are other sources of gamma background.... You got a shielding factor of 10 that is the expected shielding factor for an amateur shield of few centimeters. My DIY shield was made using 83 kg of lead (commercial) , 3.5 cm thick. It has a shielding fa...

Re: Gamma spectrum of a Polonium/Beryllium neutron source

I didn't observe your source before now. But that kind of sources are prepared using pure Po210 in a laminated structure. My guess is that the hypothesis of observing the peak at 800 keV due to Mn54 is very unlikely. The used Po210 is chemically purified. So we should come back to the gamma emission...

Re: Gamma spectrum of a Polonium/Beryllium neutron source

With so few details of your source it is difficult to help you but: For sure Po210 is not responsible of the gamma emission. The gamma yield of Po210 is very very low (that's why it was used to kill people....) A peak at about 835 keV can be observed in a PoBe neutron sources. The Po210 is created u...

Re: Geneva area: cs-137 or Sodium22

My preferred supplier of safe sources is http://www.spectrumtechniques.com/ (I think I can cite them, in any case I'm not related to them in any way) They are fast shipping worldwide and they are very courteous and helpful, write to sales@spectrumtechniques.com or fulfill the module in their site.

Re: Neutron Source (Fusor vs. Alpha-Beryllium) and Neutron shielding

I would say the AmBe neutron source is really not recommended. From this kind of source the neutron yield is quite low, typically 0.05 neutron / ( second kBq), and in case you are using high Am activity there is also an energetic gamma ray from the source (4.4 MeV). Moreover the average energy of th...
