Re: Uranium Glass – Different Glassware, Still Natural Uranium

Yeah, I think Iodine could be the right answer. Lately I've been in touch with a couple of authors of the Trinitire paper I linked in my last Trinitite thread and after finding that peak in yet another spectrum I asked them for their interpretation, because I really couldn't figure it out. Here's wh...

Uranium Glass – Different Glassware, Still Natural Uranium

Hello there, This past week my spectrometer has been busy with another piece of uranium glassware: a small cup that I bought more than a year ago, but for some reason I never tested it properly. As usual the best way to look at a piece of uranium glassware is under UV light in the dark. 01 - DSC0811...

Re: Gummite, Uranium Ore from Australia

According to the seller this sample was hot enough to give a dose rate at contact of 5 μSv/h, but that was actually an overestimation, we are more in the region of 1 μSv/h, as can be read in the PDS display that I used to record a preliminary 2 hour spectrum just to get a sense of what to exptect. ...

Re: Gummite, Uranium Ore from Australia

Yeah, this is the dose rate from gamma only. On the other hand, when talking about external exposure what you want is dose rate from penetrating radiation, we know alphas is not penetrating at all, while beta is absorbed by the top layer of skin, it can damage your skin (skin burn), but cannot affec...

Gummite, Uranium Ore from Australia

Hello there, This weekend I tested a 9.62 grams sample of Gummite from Australia. It doesn’t fluoresce under UV light but it certainly looks good nevertheless. Enlarge to have a better look. 01 - DSC08108_F2C.jpg 21000 CPM was the Geiger counter verdict, not bad but nothing too hot. 02 - DSC08078_FR...

Re: Trinitite - 28 Day Gamma Spectrum - To Barium or not to Barium?

I am curious about the lead peak in your background. You should have many times the amount of pewter needed to wipe out the lead x-ray. Gilmore states 3mm of tin to reduce the lead x-rays by 1000-fold. The pewter I used has 92% tin, 7.5% antimony, and 0.5% copper; I have 3mm of this pewter and 2mm ...

Re: Trinitite - 28 Day Gamma Spectrum - To Barium or not to Barium?

We are playing with low resolution detector, even with good energy calibration, under 100keV are nowhere linear and resolution is quite horrible as a well known behaviour stated many times before. Even in Pittauerova works with HPGe Ba133 lines they just barely emerges from Pb Ka/Kb x-rays lines in...

Trinitite - 28 Day Gamma Spectrum - To Barium or not to Barium?

Hello there, First, that's a pretty lame title for the thread, I know! Today I report about another 28 day long measurement on the Trintite Type 5 sample from Mineral Research Company. 01 - DSC07714_F2C.jpg Apparently they ran out of Type5 sample now so I was lucky to get one of the last ones, as di...

Re: A Tale of Triple Trinitite

Updates: The Trinitite book by William Kolb is well worth the cost (at least to me). It's a bit harder to get than going on Amazon, but it's also nice to be able to buy direct from the author (email him at syntec@verizon.net ). [...] I now believe that the sample has a large (and real) peak about 4...

Re: Uranocircite from Andalusia, Spain. With Shielding This Time

Hi Mike, You are absolutely right, if you read this thread (https://www.gammaspectacular.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=795) you will see I did both a shielded and unshlieded measurement of the same sample in order to try to address this very issue: how much of the 77 keV peak was from the lead shie...
