Re: what kind of detector is that?

High-purity Germanium (HPGe) Detector. Absolutely do NOT try to put High Voltage to it unless it is properly cooled down with correct Liquid Nitrogen Dewar Tank. The cool down usually takes at least 4 hours, sometimes more depending on the detector. If you try to power it up before it is completely ...

Re: Rolled lead as shielding

Here in the US, many scrap metal dealers are a good source for scrap and bulk lead at reasonable cost.

Re: GS-STANDUP

Very nice work and design, thanks for sharing Steve! After careful filling, having the lead encased in PVC has the added benefit of keeping additional contact with it to a minimum. This design is a lot safer and easier than making molds and melting lead. Don't ask how I know this... :)

Re: LaBr3 and PMT

Luuk - What is the expected resolution for a good CeBr3 scintillator crystal these days? I know it used to be higher than LaBr3, but a better choice where the inherent background of LaBr3 can get in the way of low level measurements. Has there has been some improvement in CeBr3 resolution from >4.0 ...

Re: Cosmic Ray

Hi Wojtek - Nice work! It's very interesting to know that good science can be even achieved with a good 3 inch plastic scintillator. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the second detector and the dual detector splitter box I just sent you. Thanks for the pictures and the mention. It will...

Re: Building a detector with a Scionix Scintillator

Hi Paul - Nice results and report. That Hamamatsu R6231 is one of my favorite PMTs and best sellers, along with its 3 inch cousin the R6233. I'm glad you put yours to very good use, coupling it with one of Luuk's (Scionix) nice crystals. Those PMTs are able to squeeze every bit of resolution availab...
