Sad to read that he died of drinking, according to Wikipedia.
He must have had quite a dosis of radiation, according to what is told about his home build reactor.
it's unique to achieve this in the pre-internet time, to collect the needed materials and to figure out how to build the reactor...when you are about 16 years old.
I think our educational program can not handle extraordinary gifted people like David. and that the society misses chances the way it's organised.

It is of course not to jump to conclusions. but alcohol is much lest likely to cause harm than then radiation,
