Hello from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina USA

Post by Jim Kovalchick » 02 Aug 2023, 06:51

My introduction to applications of gamma spectroscopy began in 1983 when I took a summer job doing neutron activation analysis of tobacco samples in Charlottesville, Virginia. I used a GeLi connected to a Nuclear Data NIM hardware and ND 66 pdp 11 mini computer based MCA. The spectra were stored on floppy discs.

After leaving school I didn't think much about gamma spectroscopy because I mostly focused on operation of nuclear power plants. 40 years later and I'm still focusing on power plants, but I have acquired a hobby interest in things like fusors, radiation detection, and of course gamma spectroscopy.

My current system is a NaI detector paired to a PMT and Canberra hardware. My MCA is a homebrew Teensy 4.0 microprocessor that speaks to a Canberra 8706 ADC with capability to go to 16k channels. I use Interspec for analysis.

I am joining the forum mostly to learn. There is great information sharing here.

Thanks for letting me join.

Jim,

Good to see you here, Your name is very familiar, feel I have known you for a long time, yet never met in person, VA is a bit out of my way haha..

Our forum is not as active as fusor.net as we are more focused on radiation detection and spectrometry, but I would love to see more general science conversations.

Looking forward to your input..

Steven
