Re: Cobbled prospecting scintillation detector

The Gamma Dog instrument I posted links to is exactly that - it uses tone with variable pitch based on the count rate. In addition there is an Automatic "Smart" Squelch System which monitors the background rate and sets the squelch threshold at background level so if a count rate above bac...

Re: Cobbled prospecting scintillation detector

Hi Jim, I'll suggest that you look into an Eberline ASP-1 meter - it has an adjustable click divider for the audio which makes the audio clicks actually useable with scintillators when prospecting. You can set the ASP-1 to produce one click every 64, 128, 256, etc counts and since scintillators have...

Re: Reading the datecode on Scionix-Holland detectors (38B57)?

Hi Luuk,
Thanks so much for this!
Is it fair to assume that all the ones you reported data on are manufactured after 2016?
the SED521 is 38B57 as well.

Re: Reading the datecode on Scionix-Holland detectors (38B57)?

Hi Luuk Thank you so much for the generous offer! Here is a list of the detectors - no worries if you cant do all of them - I completely understand - I just dont want to impose and I'll take whatever you can provide! I need only the year of manufacture but if there is something else available, like ...

Reading the datecode on Scionix-Holland detectors (38B57)?

Hey guys,
does anyone know how to read the datecode of the Scionix-Holland detectors like the 38B57 off the serial number?
the format is like SES395, SED936, SCE113, .. etc
thank you in advance!

Re: Radioactive Minerals

Polyethylene is what regular plastic / zip-lock bags are made of and radon goes straight thru. I know they sell thick polyethylene as a "Radon Barrier" for basements and such but the effectiveness is questionable. The other problem with retaining the Radon is that after decaying it will ge...

Re: Radioactive Minerals

I am sorry to disappoint you but there is no easy and practical way to seal the radon inside those plastic cases. Radon as noble gas will even go thru rubber seals - radon atoms permeate the rubber and sneak through the long polymer chains much like other noble gases escape through the walls of ball...

Re: BetterGeiger S-1 radiation detector

I dont have one but I do suspect that the detector is some sort of a single semiconductor component (PIN diode?) - would be interesting if you can confirm this? I dont think it is a "traditional" scintillator with scintillating crystal coupled to optical detector - could be wrong. Somebody...

Re: Gamma Spectrum DB

I think what you have done is quite useful and an amazing resource! I would absolutely love to see this DB for NaI / CsI detectors as well! I will check out your tutorial and see if I can add any of the spectrums I got. Unfortunately, when comes to NaI people use different sizes detectors, different...

Re: What is the actual half-life of Cs-137?

A value which i've seen used quite often is 30.05 years (+/- 0.08). This is a mean value...considering the random nature of radioactivity you are never going to get the same results twice if you measure such long half-life so a mean value is used instead. When you are dealing with an isotope with ha...
