Re: Monte Carlo Simulation of Nuclear Physics

The Radiation Safety Computational Center (RSICC) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in the USA is a repository for many computer programs. There are requirements for requesting a particular code package and being licensed by the US government for use of the code package. There is fee for d...

Re: Monte Carlo Simulation of Nuclear Physics

The link below is not only for monte-carlo software, but covers that plus more nuclear-related methods implemented in open-source software. This link goes to a github page with links to many other open-source software packages, advertised as - "A curated list of open source projects used in nuc...

Re: Historic Vs Modern Uranium Glass

Following is a link to an on-line tool that will allow one to calculate the isotopic activities in the Uranium decay series over a defined time span.

Re: Historic Vs Modern Uranium Glass

The build-up of daughter products from radioactive decay of U-235 and U-238 can be calculated using the Bateman equation. The equation can be implemented in a spreadsheet or computer program. More info can be found in the links below - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radioactive_decay https://en.wikip...

Re: Historic Vs Modern Uranium Glass

In a post that I made under Detectors regarding use of a SrI(Eu) detector are some uranium spectra. I have one of uranium ore and two of "processed" uranium. The processing to produce Uranium metal and Uranium oxide would likely have removed most of the built-up daughters from the decay of...

Re: VSLC - Very Small Lead Castle

For small uranium and thorium ore samples - I double bag these small samples to prevent flakes of radioactive material from spreading contamination. The plastic bags do little to attenuate the gamma radiation measured for spectroscopy. If one wanted to measure or observe the alpha and beta particles...

Re: VSLC - Very Small Lead Castle

If one is wishing to learn about radiation and radioactivity I would suggest adding some other types of detectors. What I am going to suggest is fairly inexpensive and intended for educational purposes. Firstly, I'd suggest building a simple ion chamber. A very simple, inexpensive device can be made...

Re: Highly useful and informative documents

After reading some discussions elsewhere on this forum, I decided to order a RadiaCode 103 device (a 15% discount is presently offered with free shipping.) On the RadiaCode webpage were links to interesting resources, some of which led to other resources. Several of these likely have been mentioned ...

Re: ImpulseQt v3.1.6

Steven, I have continued experimenting with ImpulseQt v3-1-6 and offer the following comments and observations. With respect to the HV setting. For the CsI detector, my determination of the HV setting was done initially using the Spectrum Techniques UCS 30 MCA and the Spectrum Techniques USX softwar...

Re: ImpulseQt v3.1.6

I downloaded ImpulseQt v3-1-6 yesterday and spent a little while using it. I first downloaded the Windows, mac, and source versions on a Win10 machine that had just been updated with the latest Win security patches. Happily, there were no warnings from the anti-virus software. I then used a "vi...
