Want to buy any ratemeter - Ludlum, Eberline, etc...

Post by Madmax » 22 Sep 2024, 00:42

Hi all,
I want to buy almost any handheld ratemeter like Ludlum or Eberline. Maybe broken inside - it's not a problem, i will fix it.
I have seen a lot on Ebay and those seems overpriced.
Regards!

I've got both a Thermo Scientific Electra and Selectra ratemeter which are looking for a new home; willing to let them go at relatively low prices, especially to fellow enthusiasts - although with you being antipodean, the cost of shipping might be as much as I'd charge for the instrument. Let me know if interested and we can work out figures.

Electra

Hi Joseph, Thanks! How much do you want for Electra? I don't see a BNC connector on the photo - is it normal?

That photo may be the Selectra which has the Intelligent Probe connector - a 7-way Fischer socket which is flush rather than poking out like BNC. That connector gives data lines to the probe and allows it to automatically select HV and dose response factors for the intelligent probes.

The Electra however is a more standard ratemeter, which instead has a PET-100 connector. That can be a pain to find a matching cable or probe for - I think they might be out of manufacturing and the few PET connectors you do see on the market can be quite pricey. I believe people will sometimes mod the instrument and switch out the PET-100 with a more common connector like BNC, MHV, or SHV; but I've left it as is - although noting your interest in repairing, could be a good mod for you to do.

However, if you're thinking of modding, I believe the Selectra is also moddable - I think the internal electronics are the same and it's just jumpers on the PCB that get changed to select between Intelligent probe or standard operation. Potentially slightly more involved but I imagine relatively simple to swap out the Fischer for a BNC and reconfigure to standard Electra operation.

In terms of pricing, I see Electras on eBay around £150; to a fellow enthusiast I'd be happy to knock that down to more like £80, potentially less for the Selectra given the slightly greater work required. Factoring in shipping and a currency conversion I guess it's something like 200-300 AUD
