Si-8B are efficient pancake beta detectors. I had the opportunity to purchase 5 of them three years ago from ebay when they were cheap. The are not sensitive to alpha. They have low inherent counter background (cps). Much lower compared to SBT10-A. The quality differs. For example one tube had high counting background and a second was photo-sensitive (Ι had to cover it with black plastic cover to make it usable). In my case the load resistor was best at 15MΩ. If you connect two of them in parallel you can make a very sensitive devise.

I am thinking GeoElectronics makes things that utilize that tube.
