What Is Too Much?

Post by James Luck » 22 Oct 2020, 06:48

Hello everyone,

So let's say I have a unhealthy habbit of collecting rad gear. Although most everything works or gets to working quality and calibration eventually.

I also may start refurbishing equipment and putting them up for sale.

Heres some of my meters lined up on my bench everything works, some are calibrated, some need work but powers on.

An more are on the way, I'm not gonna start estimating the price of that bench alone, I could estimate my costs though.

That's nowhere near enough! :P
Looks similar to my collection, albeing you have more of those big area contamination meters.
Just so happens today I took pictures of some of my detectors, maybe they'll fit in here ;-)

Any add ins are welcomed, I really like your semiconductor detectors, if only I could wrap my head around using one, I'd probably purchase a few for my collection.
I should line out my probes for a picture, although they are all in different spots some stay with certain meters or with the spectroscopy rig, others get used in pairs when I go searching.

Semiconductor Detectors aren't magic!
They behave somewhat like proportional detectors, just without any gain.

Third ludlum from the left has the 'old style' handle- Looks like it also has a wire for connecting a shoulder strap? Is this original or DIY? I'm looking for a solution for mine.

That wire looks homemade, but easy enough to make and should do the job.

Ludlum's own solution is seen on the first Ludlum on the right (model 9 I think). Built directly into the clasps that hold the can onto the instrument. The clasps are usually riveted to the can, but the cans will interchange between most older and newer instruments. The shoulder strap clasps can also be ordered from Ludlum and replace your original clasps by drilling out the rivets and replacing with machine screws or re-riveting.

Yes that was my own version of adding a strap harness to a meter, which i will say it works for a cheapo add-on. Although its a great pain to do

That will indeed be a Ludlum model 9, and those strap loops definitely add to the use of the meter. One of these days i will call up ludlum and see what the price on loop clasps will be, but for now the wire works.

The cans can interchange on most units, but i believe the 17-1's can will really only fit on a 12s, and not much will fit the mod 9's can. A model 3 will only fit some units like a mod 5 & similar, the mod 2's are smaller. Even then not all model two's can take a different bottom can, the really old ones are held on by two external screws located on the bottom, rather than clasps.
