GS-1010-LABR-14 New Build with 3.3% resolution
Hi Guys,
I just finished a nice 1" LaBr3 detector and MCA for a client and thought it might be interesting to share.
This build starts with a good quality LaBr3 Crystal, there are expensive, but worth the money.
Next we require a good PMT, here I am using a new 14 Pin ET Enterprises PMT.
Next up I have made up a custom machined black anodise aluminium housing tube.
A lining of magnetic shielding (Mu metal) is inserted around where the PMT will be..
A ground wire is attached to the magnetic shield which will later connect with the anode on the PMT.
To maximise resolution I am using a 2" PMT with a 1" crystal, this means I need something to centre the crystal on the face of the PMT, so I am using a low density foam block for this purpose, which has been machined to fit the tube and crystal.
This is the finished detector with GS-MAX-14 MCA attached.
The final spectrum is as expected Spectacular
These products are made to order, but I can usually deliver one of these in 3-4 weeks.

Hi Steven,
would you please post a Th232 spectrum with the same unit, if possible?
It would be interesting to see the difference with my GS-2020-CSI

Marco,
As requested here is a quick Thorium spectrum recorded with the GS-1010-LABR before I ship it to the client.
The high resolution crystal has excellent resolution, but as it's tiny 1" volume means it has low efficiency at the higher end of the spectrum.

Re: GS-1010-LABR-14 New Build with 3.3% resolution
A while back Steven made me a LaBr detector with a 1" crystal. Attached are a few results (using PRA) of some different thorium sources. The sources were: a thorium laden lantern mantle, a small thorite stone, and a small bottle of ThO2 powder. I don't recall the count times or the geometry and the x-axis is in "bins" rather than energy.

For some reason the Th lantern mantle continues to give a "http error" regardless of how I make the screen capture. :(

The screen capture must have exceeded some size limit. I downsized the screen capture. Here is the LaBr spectrum of a Thorium laden lantern mantle. X-axis in "bins" not energy.

Rob,
That's a nice clean spectrum, looks a little bit sharper than the one I just posted, I suspect I had a bit of temperature drift during my recording as the day was just warming up here.
The GS-MAX-14 does have temperature compensation, but I did not have any probe attached, nor has it been calibrated.
But yes, your detector is looking great 👍
