Max (madmax) and I have just finished a new spectrometer to show at the ARPS Conference next month. It is an ultra compact 2" NaI spectrometer with SiPM. https://arpsconference.com.au/
Multiple circuit boards packed full of 0603 SMT components with no space to spare and housed in a precision machined anodized Aluminum housing with USB Type C connector to the board.
The MCA is designed to be operated upside down on a bench, but we added a standard camera tripod thread to the base, so it can be used in the field with a camera gun grip.
The GS-MAX-2020-NAI-SIPM works with Becqmoni, Impulse and Atom Spectra for Android, so it would be a very powerful spectrometer both in the lab and out in the field.
A benefit of using SiPM is their lack of sensitivity to external magnetic fields, this can be a big advantage when working outdoors in the field, as detectors with regular PMT can drift quite a lot as you move and rotate the detector in earths magnetic field.
Obviously this MCA can also be made with other crystals like CsI(Tl), LaBr3, CeBr3 etc.
Silicone Photomultipliers are still extraordinary expensive, but I am sure you agree it is the future, maybe if everyone starts buying these we can get bulk pricing from the manufacturer 😊
