Guys,
today I got confirmation that I can also take a strange detector with me...
You may help me to understand what it is.
Bad thing is, I once saw it working - maybe ten years ago - and it was attached to a liquid nitrogen bottle.
I was interested of that one, as it has a nice Beryllium window under a plastic cover.
It is called ORTEC Model 8113-06225 attached an ORTEC 117A (NEG 800V BIAS)

High-purity Germanium (HPGe) Detector. Absolutely do NOT try to put High Voltage to it unless it is properly cooled down with correct Liquid Nitrogen Dewar Tank. The cool down usually takes at least 4 hours, sometimes more depending on the detector. If you try to power it up before it is completely cooled down you will destroy it. These types of detectors offer very good resolution (low FWHM values) but are in excess of $25K new and sell used (when working) in the $5K to $10K or more price range (US Dollars). They often sell broken on eBay in the $1500 to $3500 range, but they are just trash unless you get very lucky. Even then, the cost and technical difficulties to run one of these detectors can be prohibitive. VERY COOL THOUGH!

Yes that is a nice low energy HpGe detector but it looks like it has some dents in it.
Like Tom sad it needs to cool down with Ln2 to about -195 degrees Celsius before it can work.
Cooling down can take up to 10-12 hours depending on the construction and size of de crystal.
But I expect that it is defected with those dents, because they are very fragile detectors, but you could be lucky.

Ok, thanks a lot for the info. I have no information of its condition right now,
And none of us uses liquid nitrogen at home...
I do not fired it up as i wanted to get information before. The beryllium window and the shv connector got my attention so i took it with me.
