Hi guys,
Maybe you are interested to see how a very large detector a so-called Anti-Compton/Compton-suppression system is made?
If so, please read the pdf.

Luuk - You guys at Scionix Holland always impress me, but this time I'm blown away by the build. I'm sure nerves are on edge while building such a delicate and expensive detector, but WHAT FUN & SATISFACTION you and Tom must have when it's all done and report to Paul your success!!! Cheers, Tom

Re: Very Large Anti Compton system
Thank you and Scionix for sharing this report, Luuk! Very interesting!
It would be so nice if you could cut the hole through the crystal with a core drill, fixed in the tailstock of the lathe, similar to this one: Then you will not waste the core material and save 100x380mm crystal for smaller detectors :)
I don't know if possible at all, but maybe Tom can develop a proper drill for this operation. It will be also easier to drill this way, even if it still needs to be very slowly processed.
How is this gain compensation of the crystal done? (If not a company secret).

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your positive reactions on my post, here some answers to your questions.
Tom:
No not nervous just cautious when working with it, but it was fun to build a special detector like this and special when it turned out as good as it did.
Svilen:
No it is not possible to use a(any) drill as you suggested 100% sure that the crystal will break the moment the drill gets into the crystal, what is important is that you have to keep the friction as low as possible (so only one point were the material is cut away) with lots of cooling and the cutout material has to be removed from the hole as soon as possible that is not possible with the drill you suggested, besides the material that is lost is not so important, a good end results is what’s it all about.
Compensating a crystal is the key in building a good detector and is as you can understand “Company confidential”

Re: Very Large Anti Compton system
I just hoped that if slowly advanced, oiled and cooled it may be possible :) But of course, the end result is what matters here, great job once again! Thank you for your reply too.
