GS-PRO-V5.0

Post by Sesselmann » 09 Oct 2022, 14:51

Hey boys and girls,

Since the forum has been a bit quiet lately I thought I might share my current project with you.

The GS-USB-PRO has been a great success, but some users have asked for a more compact version and to be honest the board did have a lot of empty real estate. So I started playing around with the PCB design to see if I could squeeze it onto a 90x90mm square board and I was easily able to do that with the current 1206 SMT parts, I could have gone to 0603 parts but for me these are painfully small to work with. The high voltage tracks need to be spaces apart which limits how small I can make it.

For the moment there are no significant hardware changes other than replacing the giant USB Type B connector with the new USB-C standard.

I currently have a working board in a 3d printed case, and the next stage is to design and make a quality enclosure, in bulk I think I can get a nice custom made 100 x 100 x 30 mm milled aluminum case made for about the same as I was paying for the extruded case on the current model.

Developing new products take time, so I am not ready to take orders for this product yet.

I attach a few renderings for concept.

Hi Steven,

I have to admit the PCB looks very neat! What's under the shielding? I guess it's the HV supply, isn't it?

Also, the black rendering looks so clean and stealthy :))

I agree with Matthias - the black box looks great! Thanks Steven, for the sneak peek. Please keep the improvements coming. And yes, that would be the shielded HV circuit.

Looks great Steven, although I don't really mind the size of the old one either. :)

Guys and Girls,

Just a quick update on the GS-PRO-V5, I am done testing the the prototypes and pretty confident it will be a good product. I made a few last minute changes after I realised it was possible to add a cpm and cps function to the 4 digit display, with the addition of three low cost components and a bit of coding, so why not.

Don't know how useful this feature is, but it basically turns the GS into a simple rate meter just by pressing a small mode button.

Uploaded the Gerber files (PCB production files) for production of the first 50 boards today and approved the engineering files for the enclosures.

Still a few weeks to go...
