Radiation Detection on YouTube

Post by jneilson » 27 May 2024, 02:46

There's a lot of great videos on radiation detection and nuclear-related subjects on YouTube - I thought it might be good to collect some channel and video recommendations together.

Radiation Scientists and hobbyist radiation detection enthusiasts: Detector-related lectures: Other Top Recommendations: Other Detector-adjacent and nuclear topics Popular Science Communication: Other experimental science hobbyists: These are just from my own subscriptions and bookmarks, but I'm sure there's plenty more out there - I'd be interested to hear who else I've missed and get your recommendations too!

Dear jneilson,

This is a phenomenally useful list of links--many thanks for taking the time to post them.

This is a very nice and quite accurate account of the criticality accident that occurred at the Y-12 facility in Oak Ridge, Tn in 1958. I recall Dixon Callahan (former editor of Nuclear Science and Engineering, now deceased) recalling at a conference in 1980 that he was the one that reentered the facility and dropped a Cd metal scroll into the 55 gal tank to "poison" the uranium solution that had become critical. When the Cd metal scroll was dropped into the tank, containing a slightly acidic solution, a boiling-like reaction was observed and the radiation readings went up. He related that this caused some momentary excitement. It was soon realized that the boiling-like reaction was the acid reacting with the metal and the increased radiation was due to the liberation of fission products in the solution. The critical reaction was terminated. In this video a number of references were made to information found in the official report. That report and some other related papers can be found at the links below -

Here is a personal account from one of the surviving victims -

The YouTube link below discusses the criticality accident at the Los Alamos National Lab in 1958. This accident led to a fatality. A summary of this accident is found in the cited report above. This video appears to be very accurate -

The following YouTube videos are related to a nuclear accident and nuclear operations in Russia. Mayak, Kyshtym, and Chelybinsk are names used to reference the town and areas affected. The issues resulted from nuclear waste handling actions -

Another YouTube video on a more recent criticality accident occurring in Russia. I can not personally comment on the accuracy, but other videos from this source have been quite accurate. -

In January of 1961 an experimental nuclear reactor was destroyed with three fatalities. This event happened at the Idaho National Lab. There are a fairly large number of videos discussing aspects of this event. Some videos are from US government archives; others offer a variety of comments. Also cited are a number of reports, documents, and presentations associated with this event. I hesitate to use the term "accident" as there is some uncertainty as to the causal factors.

Currently ongoing is an online MTV Nuclear Engineering Summer School, and the lectures are being posted to YouTube including a few on gammas and detection.
