Forum has been a bit quiet lately so I'm posting some news just to wake it up a bit. I have been quite busy making stuff and working on the Impulse code. I am trying to make it compatible with the new GS-MAX range of high speed spectrometers. These hardware MCA's with serial port work very differently, as they send a whole spectrum to the PC not just the pulses. Trying to make Impulse recognise what kind of device is connected and switch automatically, so the user can just plug and play, almost there. 👍

Ok, count me impressed. You managed to make a CsI detector small enough to fit on a keyring? Being CsI, I bet the energy response and overall accuracy is probably not half bad. I'll keep an eye on that one and knowing myself probably end up getting one eventually. I'd love to see how they compare in accuracy over a broad range of exposure rates to small personal dosimeters used in the medical industry that I see come through our calibration lab frequently. The ones I see are probably 20 times larger, use a Si diode detector that is just barely capable of scraping by regulatory standards here, is incapable of measuring anything below 1 mR/hr even remotely accurately, and costs substantially more.

I guess there is something to be said for intent of application though, the dosimeters I calibrate are almost exclusively used to monitor in room dose during Y-90 microsphere injections where anticipated exposure rate is definitely over the specified 10 mR/hr max. Nonetheless, I think I'd trust one of these more than the stupid little OSLD personal dosimeter badges that always give me a null dose report at the end of the quarter despite me being certain I got some dose...

You are right, the keyring detector is super responsive and really cool, I carry it everywhere, but truth be told, I can't take credit for this design, it was designed and made by my friend Max Koshelev, Max is an EE and now lives in Sydney so we have been working together on some cool projects.

If the keyring dosimeter was intended for use as a dosimeter in a particular environment it could easily be calibrated to a specific isotope. Max and I attended the ARPS conference in Brisbane recently and we had a lot of interest from companies that want active dosimeters. Wouldn't you rather have a dosimeter that alarms and warns you of exposure, than finding out 3 months later that you have been over exposed.

I carry it in my pocket, and when I drive past the dental hospital on the way to work I occasionally hear the alarm go off when they take an x-ray.
