Cs-137 contamination in Austria

Post by Milos » 19 Aug 2019, 21:59

Two weeks ago we spent nice holiday in Gosau and Hallstatt. These places lay in Austrian Alps near Salzburg and look like a paradise, but area around Gosau hide one nasty secret. By chance the place we were accomodated is one of Austria Cs-137 hotspots. As is my common habit last few months, wherever I travel, I take sample of soil, so I took the chance there as well and dig sample for gamma spectrometry.

I've known, that Austria belongs to one of the most heavily affected countries in central Europe after NPP Chernobyl accident, but seeing the results is still surprising.
For comparison, I placed two spectra of contamined soil from our country together with one from Austria to the graph below. More information about this measurement and location can be found at my blog.

Milos,

Thanks for sharing, it does indeed look like a very beautiful spot, and maybe not so surprising if fallout has accumulated in the silt as water washes it down the mountain. Archeologists in the future will be able to date their core samples to the exact year.

Hi,
nice report, can you give an estimated activity in Bq/kg ?
I've also taken a soil sample in a hotspot here in Italy (Valsesia) today, after only 1 minute integration time 137Cs peak is shown, it's like a calibration source!!!
I will post the spectra .

Hi,

Regrettably, I do not have suitable calibration source at home, since it is not allowed in our country. But I'm going to take a look to statutory regulations, whether there is something like exempt quantity, or take my gamma spectrometer to the Faculty of Millitary Health Sciences, where such source is available. Would be interesting to calibrate my gamma spec for quantitative measurements. However, even with available disc source (point source) it would be tough task, since my setup used for soil measurement is really far from point source geometry, so some corrections would be needed. The best option would be to use the same approach as Carl Willis, who used liquid solution with known activity of Cs-137 and spiked blank soil sample, which was farther used for calibration in the identical geometry as unknown samples. But especiall in this case I would expect the SWAT visit, knocking on our doors very quickly.

According to the map which I referred at my blog, surface activity at the place, where I took the soil sample was in order of 60 kBq/m2 in 2016.

If you would be intertested and able to send me aproximatelly 300 g of sieved soil without stones and biological debris, I can measure it and compare resulting data with the measurement from Austria and from our country. BTW I've just finished measurement of a soil sample from northern part of the Czech Republic. Contamination there reaches the level of the Austrian sample, so if anyone would be interested I can send it for measurement and comparison as well.

Hi Milos,
Eurostandard in your's country is one of the biggest supplier of isotopes calibration sources!
According to a map of my soil pick up place, the surface activity was >25kBq/m2 in 2013, i will try to estimate the Cs137 activity based on calculated K40 efficiency of my detector with same geometry/density (Marinelli 4Pi soil spiced with K salt) based on efficiency/energy curve of NaI/Tl detectors found on the net.
I will take another soil sample in the next weeks, i've taken this sample during an airplane trip in an altiport (small airplane strip in mountain) so taken only a small batch just enough to fill my Marinelli.

I contacted Eurostandard in the past to get some sources (I'm from Slovakia), but they didn't show any interest in private queries. Looks like they handle commercial requests only.
So I went ahead with SpecTech and everything went smooth. Source arrived well declared, checked by customs, no problem as long as it's within the legal limits.
