Throium Chloranilate

I acquired a few grams of thorium chloranilate (C12Cl4O8Th) recently. Spectrum collected with my 20x100mm NaI-Tl detector.

Thanks for sharing, where did you find this obscure material?

I Googled "Throium Chloranilate" and almost nothing shows up. Do you know what it is used for?

It’s very obscure and as best as I can tell has exactly one use. Detecting microgram quantities of fluoride in aqueous solutions through a very tedious process. I have a bunch of google alerts set for various terms that bring up old chemical reagents and NORM. I had no idea what the chloranilate ion even was until after I bought it haha. There was residue on the outside of the vial (it’s a black powder not unlike printer toner) so after taking the picture I decontaminated it and double bagged it for the spectrum, now it’s in my big lead box.
