Autunite question

Post by Jbrown123 » 26 Nov 2021, 07:40

Hello,

I have this small sample of rock with Autunite and I would like to know if the amount of autunite should be of any concern.

The rock sample is around 8cm in length and the sample has not been broken or chipped, but would such a sample emmit a worrying level of Radon?

I've looked over the internet for advice but can find very little and saw some interesting topics by "Go-Figure",

Thank you in advance

First of all welcome to the forum. It looks as if you might have missed the rules in our introduction. We prefer all new members to briefly introduce themselves in the introductions forum and consequently sign posts with their real name. The reason for this is to make trolls feel uncomfortable and leave, so far this has worked well 😊

I am not an expert on mineral samples, but my guess is unless you have a huge collection of radioactive minerals or build your house on Autunite Hill, it's probably not. a big concern.

If you happen to have a geiger counter or spectrometer you could measure the activity in your rock and get a better understanding of what might be in it.

A geiger counter would also aid you in finding more exciting minerals, more importantly knowing and understanding what and how much/little radioactivity you are dealing with will put your mind at ease. Do you put it in your pocket or throw it as far as you can and run ?

I am also not a mineralogy expert, but a sample of this size should not be able to produce a dangerous amount of radon in a room, which you also very likely ventilate from time to time. Your concern should be more likely not to inhale or ingest a particle of the autunite crystals and keep it out of reach of children if you have any. Don't wear it on your neck and I think it will be safe enough to keep it :)
