Hi all,
Sorry for the newbie question but I am trying to export spectra collected using a GSB-2020-NAI with a 2.0" NaI(TI) Detector which I measured using the PRA software. I need these to be in (ideally) 256 channel format but they can also be in 1024 channel format, so I can calibrate the spectra using GammaSpec software (https://www.gammaspec.com.au/). The export option from PRA provides many more rows than that, which appears to be guided by the highest energy response that was measured (example below). How can I best convert this back to 256 or 1024 so that I can work with it?
Many thanks,
Ian

Re: Exporting Specta from PRA in 1024 Channel Format
Ian,
PRA does not allow direct definition of the number of channels, but you do have control over the bin size.
The full spectrum is 100 arb.u so if you set the bin size to 0.1 it becomes 100/0.1 = 1000 channels
If you for example wanted 1024 channels you would set the bin size to 0.0977 (get you close)
For 256 channels the arb.u would be about 0.392 arb.u
On the other hand you could try Impulse where you can directly set the number of channels. https://www.gammaspectacular.com/blue/s ... ds/impulse
Steven
PS: You could have attached a csv file to your post ....

Re: Exporting Specta from PRA in 1024 Channel Format
Hi Steven,
Thank you for your very useful reply! I will try out Impulse in the future but is there a way to convert my already collected data to 256 (or 1024) channels?
Many thanks,
Ian

Ian,
If you still have the PRA file it should be easy to re-export it as 256 channels, otherwise it's an excel job.

Re: Exporting Specta from PRA in 1024 Channel Format
Thanks Steven, this is incredibly helpful!
Two related questions for you:
1) Can you advise how to do the 256 channel export from PRA? I've tried this but it has proved beyond my (limited) capabilities...
2) The spectra attached above seems to have more than 100 arb.u (in this case 188.6). Am I understanding it incorrectly?
Many thanks in advance,
Ian

Re: Exporting Specta from PRA in 1024 Channel Format
Ian,
Providing you have the original PRA file it is easy... The good thing about PRA is that it stores the entire recording, i.e. every pulse along with it's height and distortion number, not just counts per channel (a stroke of brilliance by Marek).
1) Open PRA, then open your original .pls file.
2) View the pulse height histogram window and data acquisition and analysis
3) Set bin size to 0.46 and click apply
4) Now export the Pulse height Histogram as a text file
You should end up with around 261 channels, so just open it and delete the last 5 rows.
**
It seems like PRA spectra often go to 120 arb.u, this is probably because the line-in range on sound cards is around +- 1.2V, this would make sense as 1 arb.u would be exactly 0.01 Volt
Apologies, the forum does not permit text files...

Re: Exporting Specta from PRA in 1024 Channel Format
Hi Steven,
Thank you, this is very useful!
One final question about this, my original file went up to ~180 arb rather than 120. Should I amend the bin size to include the higher arb numbers or just assume a maximum of 120 (or 100) arb and ignore everything above this? The highest recorded arb # changes between files and always seems to include a count so I assume it just reports this up to the highest measurement rather than providing the total range.
Many thanks,
Ian

Re: Exporting Specta from PRA in 1024 Channel Format
Ian, It sounds like you may be running your detector gain a bit high. A good rule of thumb is to set the gain where K40 (1640 keV) peak lands at around 50 arb.u. (middle of your spectrum).
The reason why PRA sometimes records counts higher than 120 arb.u. is in the pulse height calculation method, this is how it works...
PRA PULSE FINDER
The signal from your detector comes in as a stream of numbers from 0 to 65536 (16 bit), this range represents the CODEC input voltage range -1.2 to +1.2 volts.
The program looks at the first 60 samples and tests if sample #30 has maximum value if not it move one sample to the right and check again.
When it loops through and eventually finds a string of 60 samples and sample #30 is the highest value, it then checks if sample #30 exceeds the set threshold.
If so, it has successfully found a pulse, now it looks in this string to find the minimum value and calculates:
\[ max(sample) - min(sample) = Pulse \ height \]
The reason you get samples larger that 120 arb.u is that large positive pulses are often followed by a tail that goes negative before the baseline is restored.
That said the advantage of this method over other methods is that it does not depend on baseline stabilisation.
* For simplicity I omitted the function of normalisation, every pulse is also normalised squared and summed in order to calculate a distortion factor, this distortion factor is compared to the mean pulse shape and filtered out if the distortion exceeds your set threshold.
If my explanation has left you more confused, don't worry it's not necessary to understand the algorithm to use PRA or Impulse.
Last but not least, yes, just adjust the bin size until you get your whole spectrum into the 256 channels.
