Hi guys,
I did a test with a rae and high preformance crystal/detector.
if interested please read the pdf.

Re: Test with a special and rare high resolution crystal!
Luuk,
Thanks for sharing..
I spoke with one of the growers of Strontium iodide crystals at the IEEE last week, it looks like a very nice product, but as usual they were reluctant to give me a price. I think it would be excellent if we could get 1.5" affordable 1.5" encapsulated crystals in in SrI(Eu).
The raw material Strontium Iodide might not be cheap.

Hi Steven,
Like I wrote in my post it is not a common scintillator, the main problem for hobby use is that it needs a long shaping time 10-16 μsec.
I am not sure but I don’t think that software mca’s cannot handle these long
shaping times.
The price won’t make you happy it is in the order of 700-800$ /cm³, so far to expensive for hobby use.

Luuk,
I don't think the long shaping time is an issue for sound card spectrometry, because we stretch the pulse to 100 µs anyway. The New GS-USB-PRO also has the option to adjust the pulse length, and the software we use can learn any pulse shape.
Price might be an issue for many, but for work that requires high resolution it't still a cheap option compared to HPGE.
