AC-3-7 Eberline connector

Post by BMC » 05 Jun 2022, 07:10

Good evening,

I cannot find information on this type of connector used on certain scintillation detectors from Eberline.
Ref at Eberline CP-1 or CJ-1

For example on an Alpha AC-3-7 probe

I don't have any detectors or instruments with these connectors, but I've heard somewhere that the way most hobbyists deal with them is with a 3D printed adapter to convert them to BNC.

I found this example (searching "eberline" on thingiverse), but I have no first-hand knowledge of this or any similar 3D printed adapters: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3026252

I was surprised how little information I found about these connectors with a Google search, but I was probably not looking in the right place. The geiger counter group on groups.io would probably have several members that have solved this in one way or another.

it's a good idea .... the 3D adapter.
this connector remains mysterious?

Others would know more, but as far as I can tell it is a custom connector that Eberline created. One could be charitable and assume it was done for cost or performance reasons to optimize their application. It also could have been done to make it harder for users to switch to a different brand of detectors or meters. I've looked into buying various Eberline detectors with that connector and came to the conclusion that it would be best to buy one that included a connector/cable so I could modify it into an adapter for SHV or BNC. I suppose if the deal was good enough I'd consider messing with the 3D printed adapter (I have a 3D printer) or modifying the detector body to use a more common connector.

It's the female part that interests me!
To make an adapter has a SMARTPACP1 to BNC.
The smartpacbnc are not found (cable for Eberline E-600)

I suggest joining the "GeigerCounterEnthusiastsGroup" at groups.io ( https://groups.io/g/GeigerCounterEnthusiastsGroup ) to communicate with others that are hacking this unit. There's a recent thread with 115 posts about the E-600 and I believe part of that was discussing the connector. I haven't paid close attention because I don't have that particular equipment, but it seems like that thread would have some information to get you started or at least provide contact with folks who are on the same quest.

There's also the similar "GeigerCounters" group at groups.io (https://groups.io/g/GeigerCounters ) which has a lot of overlap but more members.

I'm a member of both groups but mostly lurk since I rarely feel I have anything new to contribute.

Good luck!
