Surprise result from CsI(Na) build

Post by Paul McK » 20 Jan 2016, 23:07

Hello all. For general interest, this post is about a 2"x2" unbranded scintillator I found for a good price a while back and it returned surprisingly good resolution.

I built a detector using a Philips XP5212 PMT (8.8% 57Co) in much the same construction as my previous post on Scionix... ie Perfection Mica Mu metal shield, 40M divider into one of Steven's blue anodised housings. The scintillator was significantly heavier than the equivalent NaI(Tl) which confirmed it as a CsI(Na) type.

I powered it up and did a run of 137Cs in a lead castle with PRA, 192kb/sec 24 bit audio & a GS1100PRO and immediately the spectrum showed a good resolution which I later measured as around 6.8%. It returned an average just below 6.9% over multiple runs.

This encouraged me to ask Tom to find a good R6231 (which arrived as 8.1% 57Co). I then tested this on the scintillator and shaved a further point off the resolution with an easy 6.8% average resolution.

Very pleased with this result some pictures and spectra attached.

Indeed, very nice spectra, it looks like a Russian crystal is that right?

Steven

Probably not as it came from the US. There are no markings on it and it did not have any original packaging it was simply sold as CsI(Na) when I felt the weight it sort of confirmed it was. I put it temporarily onto a PMT and within an hour of receiving it found it has such a good resolution. Then I wished I had taken my time and made it a permanent build being worried that I could not duplicate the results but it worked out OK.
