Most people would have written off this detector as dead, but not Luuk!
I certainly had no expectations of saving the detector after I saw the damage to the pins on the PMT, my best hope was to save the large crystal (of course I wasn't aware of the cracks). When Luuk showed me pictures of the crystal, I had given up all hope.
Amazingly it arrived in the mail this week, it not only looks like a new detector, it works like a new detector, what Luuk did is nothing short of magic, so I am very grateful. My next job is to build a solid shield for this detector and mount it safely on my work bench.
PS: I am intrigued to learn how treatment by rough sandpaper on the sides of the crystal can improve the resolution, and would like to know if the physics behind this can be explained. Does the direction of sanding make a difference?

There are different way to get the light out of a crystal it all depends on the dimensions what is the best method, unfortunately I can not tell you the real details that is company confidential !
Sanding is a way to get a very good reflection area, the right way of the sanding and the grain used is also depending on the crystal dimensions and type of crystal, polishing is also possible but not always preferable.
I know that most of the crystals that are sold are polished, nice if you want to look inside but not necessary.
The main thing is that the light comes out as fast as possible and were ever it is produced in the crystal it comes out at the same time.
In your case sanding was done with a large grain and circular it gave the best result, that was by the way not how the crystal was original treated it looked only very light sanded or maybe treated with steelwol but because it was so wet not very good to see.
