Crystal supplier's

Post by James Luck » 11 Oct 2020, 13:32

Hello everyone.

I have a issue for anyone who may have a solution.

I want to go further into rad detection, and start producing some of my own scintillation equipment. Sorta combine three of my hobbies, into something that i may one day make money off of.
Radiation detection, machining, and electronics being the three of them.
I'm well aware of the pricing being quite up there, heck I own quite a bit of working rad gear. (about a dozen meters) I also make jewelry, if you want to talk about spending money, I'm your guy.

Anyhow I've had no luck so far trying overseas producers of crystal, havent tried the big guys yet I may be afraid of those prices even for a guy whose spent a few $$$ on a 3ct stone.

It seams there are plenty of used and nos scintillators and crystals around for the larger end. I wanted to see if I can hit the smaller size market.

anyone help with sourcing of materials ?

I have the sizes down, and the types I'd like to use. Honestly everything else has been easy to source, but the pesty crystal's. Issues also come with the fact that I wont be using small quantities.

Anyhow anyone with ideas, go ahead and throw them at me.

Hi James,
I expect your looking for capsulated crystals? not bare crystals?
Your best cheap source is eBay but you have to take a close look at what you want to buy, but it is possible to get great detector/crystals there.
There is a lot of old junk for sale but also some great quality NaI(Tl)detectors/crystals mostly from Russia/Ukraine.
If you want to buy new then the cheapest source is Epic (China) they make good detectors for the lowest price on the market
special is you are looking for NaI(Tl).
There are are only a few suppliers so you choice is limited.

Thank you for the reply, Luuk.

I'm aware of Ebay being a large supplier of Nal( Tl ) crystal's, both bad and good in quality.

The plan wasn't to use Nal(Tl) for the few I was going to run tests makes of. Mostly for the fact of everyone using Nal and/or it is the greater majority of what's out there.
For many reasons it's the choice of many.

I was looking for a supplier of Csl dopped or undopped, BGO or LYSO Bare crystal mostly.

As most of those Crystal's are not super moisture sensitive, and I then can machine a holder into my scintillator body, which will be hermetically sealed.
Sizing is smaller nothing much bigger than 38mm height or width.
was also looking into slices, these being the only real Nal crystal I was looking for.

Anyhow I'll continue looking for a supplier overseas.

One more thing Luuk, In my exploration of the internet I found PbWO4 crystal sold under scintillation crystal. I have not had much luck finding anything about the crystal, do you have any information on them?

James.

I got a reasonable quote from Ost for some smaller CsI(tl) crystals, but the postage was $50, which seemed a bit steep. The best option would be for some of us to get together and make a bigger order to cut costs. If anyone is interested in this, let me know.

Hi Ben H.

I would be interested to buy Csl(Tl) crystal from Ost Photonics, please add me to your shopping list. We will arrange the details at PW (can we correspond in German?).
