How do personal radiation dosimeters differ to a geiger counter ?
Atom personal dosimeters employ the latest SiPM technology, so instead of a large gas filled tube they use a tiny scintillation crystal with a sensitive silicon photomultiplier, this technology is 100's of times more sensitive than a geiger counter the same size.
Which specific features do ATOM dosimeters employ to guarantee fast response to radiation ?
Atom dosimeters have a built in microprocessor which continuously records the pulse count from the scintillation sensor and by connecting to the devise from a smartphone the user can manually set the desired alarm threshold. Whenever the count rate exceeds the threshold a loud beeper will sound. There are three threshold levels each with a different tone to continuously inform the user of the danger level.
How does the total absorbed dose reset function work ?
The microprocessor inside every ATOM dosimeter has built in FRAM memory and keeps a continuous record of the dose. This number is transmitted to the smartphone via bluetooth at the rate of 1Hz. Long term exposure and instant exposure can be calculated by the smartphone app using this data.
How long do the batteries last ?
ATOM dosimeters are designed for minimum energy requirement and can run for over 3 months on a common button cell. There are several energy saving features, such as clicks on/off and bluetooth on/off etc, all which can be carried out using simple gestures. Holding the dosimeter horizontal and flipping it on it's axis turns off the sound. Shaking it violently will stop the alarm etc..
